My favourite legal podcasts

I love listening to podcasts. I listen to them when I’m on the train, driving, cleaning my apartment and whilst doing many other tasks. I am a huge fan of multi-tasking, and listening to podcasts allows me to do just that.

With that in mind, I thought I would compile a list of my favourite legal podcasts so that you can explore some new shows. Hopefully I can introduce you to at least one new gem!

Legal industry podcasts

The Student Lawyer Podcast

So I may be a little biased given that I co-founded and co-host this podcast, but I have spent many hours having inspiring and thought-provoking conversations with a range of legal professionals and students and recording them all for you to listen to in your own time! We started the podcast with the aim to make the legal sector more accessible to everyone. We have interviewed career changers such as former electricians, policemen, chefs and single parents, who have all found success in the legal profession, securing training contracts at top international firms and winning prestigious scholarships from the Inns of Court.

We also speak to judges, barristers, solicitors, partners and trainees about how they got into the industry, and to find out more about what the job really involves.

We have released over 55 episodes for you to binge, and recently celebrated reaching over 20,000 downloads. Click on the hyperlink to listen to this legal podcast.

Talking Law with Sally Penni MBE

This is an excellent legal podcast with a wide range of interesting and accomplished guests from the legal industry. One of my favourite things about this podcast is Sally Penni’s interviewing style. Sally is a brilliant interviewer and her experience in the legal industry as a multi-award winning barrister really shines though in the quality of questions that she asks her guests.

How I Lawyer Podcast with Jonah Perlin

I came across this podcast recently and was instantly hooked; it features lawyers from across the pond in America - it’s fascinating learning about the legal industry in the USA.

I have only listened to two episodes so far: one was an interview with Ken Basin, a top Hollywood entertainment lawyer who gives insight into how he secured a role in such a competitive sector. Ken also provides his top tips for negotiating like a pro and why a lawyer should never just say “no” when advising a client. The second episode I listened to was with Brian Potts, an energy lawyer at Perkins Coie, an Am Law 50 firm. Brian provides unique advice to those who are seeking to break into the industry, explaining how he went from being rejected from all of the Am Law 100 firms two years in a row, to ending up as a partner at one of the firms that rejected him! Truly inspirational and motivational!

Other guests include death row lawyers, a supreme court advocate, and in-house tech lawyers. I am very much looking forward to binging more of this show!

Unpacking Contract Law

This podcast doesn’t have many episodes, but it is a great way to hear practising lawyers and academics debating cases involving contract law. In each episode, they pick one case and go really in depth, unpicking the decisions, discussing why the case was decided in the way that it was, and what alternative scenarios could have produced different results in court. The hosts sometimes have conflicting opinions so hearing them debate about contract law is also very interesting. I really enjoy learning about contract law and I find that this is a great way to develop a multidimensional understanding, and to practise looking at issues from various standpoints.
