Training Contract Wardrobe Essentials

Starting your journey as a trainee solicitor is an exciting step in your legal career. You probably have 101 questions about what it is like to work in a law firm, including what on earth do I wear to the office as a trainee solicitor?! Do I need to wear a suit every day? Can I wear jeans?

The answer will largely depend on what type of law firm you work at, as some are more relaxed than others in terms of dress code.

You likely won't need to wear a suit unless you are going to court, so for every day training contract office wear, but I would generally say that smart casual, but erring more on the side of smart, is the best way go. My motto has always been that you can never look too smart, and first impressions count for a lot, so taking care when selecting items of clothing for work is essential.

My advice is to building a versatile, polished, and comfortable wardrobe with lots of classic pieces that you can mix and match easily.

Here’s a guide to help you curate a capsule office wardrobe with staple pieces that will see you through your training contract (and beyond) with confidence.

1. Crisp White Shirts

A crisp white shirt is a must-have for any trainee lawyer's wardrobe. It’s versatile, pairs well with almost anything, and always looks clean and polished.

Choose shirts made from high-quality cotton or a cotton blend that resists wrinkling. I'm a huge fan of linen shirts but they tend to look creased by the time you arrive at the office so I would avoid linen for your capsule work wardrobe.

Here are a couple of great options which are super affordable:

Pro Tip: Have a few variations—classic button-downs, blouse styles, and maybe one with a subtle pattern to add variety to your daily wear.

2. Smart Trousers

Having a smart and comfortable pair of trousers is a must have for any trainee solicitor's capsule wardrobe.

Look for trousers (or skirts) in classic colors like black, navy, or grey. High-waisted, straight-leg trousers are universally flattering, while a pencil skirt can offer a more formal look.

Ensure they are made from durable fabrics that maintain their shape throughout the day, and consider trousers with a bit of stretch for added comfort during long hours at the desk or on the go.

I bought my trousers from Marks & Spencer and they have lasted two years yet were super affordable and look much more expensive than they were. Here are a couple of great options:

3. Versatile Tops

Beyond white shirts, you’ll want a selection of tops that can be paired with different suits and skirts to create various outfits.

Choose tops in neutral tones or soft pastels that can be easily mixed and matched. My go-tos are smart t-shirts which can be paired with trousers and a blazer, or waistcoats for when the weather is warmer but when you still want to look sharp and tailored.

If you see me in the office, I'll usually be wearing a tshirt with trousers and a blazer as it looks put together yet is super comfortable and stylish.

Here are two of my favourite tops that pair well with smart trousers:

4. Comfortable, Professional Shoes

As a trainee solicitor, you’ll likely be on your feet a lot, whether running to court or attending meetings. Comfortable shoes that maintain a professional appearance are a must.

Classic black or nude pumps with a moderate heel are timeless and versatile. Consider investing in loafers or brogues for a more practical, yet still stylish, option. Leather is a good choice for durability and comfort.

Keep an extra pair of flats in your desk drawer for emergencies or when your feet need a break.

I'd love a pair of Gucci loafers, so if your budget allows then definitely go for those, otherwise, a leather dupe works just as well. Here are my favourites:

5. Minimalist Accessories

Accessories can elevate your outfit and add a touch of personality, but in the legal profession, it’s best to keep them understated.

Opt for simple, elegant jewellery - think stud earrings, a classic watch, and a delicate necklace. A structured, medium-sized handbag in a neutral color will complement your wardrobe while holding all your essentials.

Avoid overly flashy or trendy accessories that may distract from your professional appearance.

All of my jewellery is from Monica Vinader and it's simple enough to not look flashy in the office, but also special enough to elavate a basic outfit. Here are a couple of my favourite pieces:

7. Coats and blazers

Depending on the season, you’ll need appropriate outerwear that complements your professional wardrobe.

In colder months, a tailored wool coat in black, navy, or camel is a great investment.

I have a Jaeger winter coat that I paid £400 for in 2013 and it still looks brand new. I wear it every winter so the cost per wear makes it basically free! Although my coat is no longer being sold, here is one just like it:

For rainy days, a trench coat is both stylish and practical:

Pro Tip: Keep a compact umbrella in your bag for unexpected weather changes.
